The Bench deeming him to come under the description of an incorrigible offender, ordered him to receive 25 lashes, but directed the ¡nfliction thereof to be suspended until his master should prefer another cause of complaint against him, on the lad promising to return to his duty; he was allowed to go with the sentenced of 25 lashes hanging over him in terrorem."16
  • Newspaper: He was mentioned in the The Monitor on 12 July 1827:
"Funeral of the late Mr. Wentworth. Invitations were received by a very numerous circle of friends, public officers, tradesmen, and dependents, to attend the last testimony of respect to this Gentleman. The weather was rather unfavourable. Nevertheless, forty carriages and gigs, and a numerous train of horsemen assembled at Home-Bush, and after partaking of refreshment, accompanied the Hearse from Home-bush to Parramatta Church. After service (performed by the.Rev. S. Marsden principal Chaplain) the cavalcade proceeded to the burial-ground on foot, the coffin on account of its great weight (800 cwt) being still conveyed in the Hearse to the gate of the cemetery. From thence it was borne to the entrance of the family-vault on the shoulders of eight servants of the deceased. After the service at the grave was over, the Company were all invited without distinction to partake of an elegant cold collation, provided for a hundred guests at Walker's. One toast was given. " The memory of our departed friend." (Drunk in silence.) The Sheriff sat at the head, of the Table and Mr. Justice Lawson at the foot.
THE funeral was furnished by Mr. Shaughnessy, and no accident or confussion took place. The horses were steady, and all was conducted with great propriety. We do not remember attending so numerous and respectable a private funeral since we came to the Colony. As Mr. Shaughnessy, the undertaker, was passing down King-street on Thursday last, he was unceremoniously saluted by a mare, which, was very improperly left tied to a cart in the street, with a violent kick, which pre- cipitated him across the street considerably further than the length of the longest of his own coffins. " What an..evil minded beast," exclaimed the prostrate son of Erin "to pay so little respect to the usual finisher of this worldly career !" Mr. S. was not much hurt, and would in all probability have taken ,little notice of the affair, but for the interfe- rence of the constabulary, who forthwith re- quested his attendance at the Police Office, to prosecute the owner for the neglect evin- ced upon the occasion. The Bench levied a fine of ten dollars upon the master of this "evil-minded beast," which being paid, they were both discharged."18

  • Newspaper: Thomas was mentioned in the The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser on 25 June 1836:
"Thomas Shaughnessy.-I am an undertaker; knew Richard Cheers for twenty five years, and buried bim at last ; recollect his going to Kaines' house ; used frequently call into see him, partly on my own account, and partly through the solicitation of his daughter, Mrs. Walsh ; he was at Kains's five or six weeks ; he used to drink hard, beginning about 5 o'clock in the morning ; he continued drinking when at Kaines's ; saw him there two or three times a week ; he appeared in a state of stupidity; I told his son a few days before his death, that if he did not remove the old man, he would not last long.
Cross-examined.-I never saw him outside the door after he went to Kains's. I called out of friendship to see him, not
for the sake of a job.
Re examined.-His son paid me the funeral expenses."22

  • Newspaper*: Thomas was mentioned in the The Sydney Monitor on 8 May 1837:
    "Honest Tom Shaughnessy.
When men in private life exhibit singular kindness of heart, and which, from their occupations happens to become wellknown, it is the duty of, the Press, when it can so far intrude on private affairs, to record them. For, if it be a duty to expose wickedness of every kind when it in- trenches on the public weal, how much. more is it the duty of the same powerful agent to exalt unusual goodness, and re- cord it in the public chronicles of the country? , Mr. Thomas Shaughnessy was: by trade an undertaker. With a face of lengthened gravity be joined a most sociable and jocular disposition. He had the art of laughing inwardly; a nice ob, server, however, could discern in the cast of his eye, the merriment which, under a grave aspect was going on within. But besides his love of humour, Shaughnessy was a man of singular benevolence; the consequence was, that unlike his brethren of the same craft, he was able neither to build houses nor keep his carriage. Shaugh- nessy was not esteemed by the religious; because his religion consisted but little in external devotion; it possessed the un- equivocal stamp of perpetual works of kindness and charity. Many a poor man has worthy Tom buried, whose widowed wife and children never paid him; and what is still more to this good Christian's credit, he was pretty certain at the very time he made the decent coffin, and carried the dead to their long home, he would have to do the job gratis. Our Saviour advises his followers to lay up their trea- sures in heaven. This was honest Tom's opinion; so he buried - the corpses of worthy people at a risk. If he were paid, well; if not, he considered (no doubt) that the Saviour of men would be as good as his word, and place it to his credit in another book kept by himself. Peace be with thy manes, honest Tom Shaughnessy! Thou wast a sympathiser with the human race, and especially with those in affliction! May your family find, in the world, and it not in the world - with God, one who will be to them better than yourself."26
  • Newspaper: Thomas was mentioned in the The Colonist on 17 August 1837:
