  • Newspaper: A newspaper article of interest appeared in the Argus on 9 July 1912:
    "MAKARINI'S PASSENGERS.
News has been received at the Immigra- tion Bureau to the effect that the passen-gers to arrive by the s.s. Makarini will in- clude 13 land-seekers (66 persons), with capital amounting to £2,480; 48 farm- workers (120 souls), with £973 between them; and 47 domestics. A number of the men are described as "experienced gard- ners," and others as farm labourers. There is very little demand for gardeners."24

  • Newspaper: A newspaper article of interest appeared in the Argus on 23 July 1912:
    "NEW LINER MAKARINI.
Buïlt by Workman, Clark, and Co., the famous Belfast firm, for the "Tyser" line, the new steamer Makarini is not only the longest vessel of her line, but may also be considered the pioneer of the fleet as regards catering for passengers from Great Britain to Australian and New Zealand ports. Hitherto the accommodation for voyagers pro-vided on "Tyser" liners has been of modest dimen- sions, but on the Makarini there is room and to spare for a thuosand persons, irrespective of her officers and crew. Nearly 500ft in length, with an ample beam of 65ft., the Makarini is of 10,642 tons gross. Her deck space, which is unrestricted as far as possible, affords liberal promenading scope, whilst the cabins, of which there are 151, leave little, if anythlng. to be desired on the score of space, ventilation, or general comfort. These cabins, which arc all placed on the shelter deck, contain from two to ten berths, whilst the hat us, lavatories, and other conveniences are on a highly satisfactory plan. It in almost super- fluous to state that the liner is lit by electricity, that she has wireless installed, and generally that nothing conducive to the safety and comfort of the travelling public is wanting on board. Driven by twin-screws, the vessel is capable of attaining a sea speed of 14 knots. The dining saloon, which extends the full width of the ship, is an especially commodious apartment, capable of seat-ing 450 people at the one time in comfort. Of the seagoing quallties of the liner, Captain Hollis speaks highly, several periods of stormy weather having been passes through by the vessel with flying colours. Her average speed between Lon-don and Cape Town was 13.4 knots an hour, but, owing to strong adverse winds and seas on the trip thence to Melbourne, her average speed fell to 12.9 knots. For Melbourne the vessel has 3,500 tons of general cargo, which is being landed at a berth alongside No. 2 shed, Victoria Dock."28

    "PEOPLING THE LAND.
    WORK FOR NEW ARRIVALS.
    MAKARINI'S THOUSAND.
The thousand passengers who arrived by the steamer Makarini are not to remain long in the muster-room at the Immigra-tion Bureau. In the course of a few days all the new arrivals will have been placed in remunerative employment, and the de-partmental officers will be ready to deal with as many more as soon as they become available. Domestic servants continue in demand, Mrs. Bingham, the matron in charge, had three times as many applicants as there were girls available yesterday, and the ques-tions which controlled the situation as re-gards the helps who arrived by the s.s. Makarini were confined simply to wages and conditions. Single farm-workers are securing employment at 25/ per week, lads at from 10/ to 15/, and married couples at about 30/. All the artisans, with the exception of two bricklayers and a plasterer, have secured engagements through Mr. Appleby, secretary of the Master Builders' Associa- tion, and even those will be found employ- ment during the next few days."30

"By the courtesy of Captain Crighton, of the Tornado, we have in our possession later English news, being down to the 13th of April. As there was only one paper of that date on board, of course the news is very meagre. The vessel brings nearly four hundred Government female immigrants, who appeared to be in excel- lent health and spirits. One poor girl, just as the ship entered port, fell into a fainting fit and died. The vessel is remarkably clean, and fitted with great care to convenience and accommodation, and Dr. Macosh, under whose immediate care the immi- grants have come out, speaks very highly of the general conduct of the whole of them."20
  • (Interest) Newspaper: A newspaper article of interest appeared in the Argus on 20 July 1855:
"To the Commander, Officers, and Owners of the Clipper Ship TORNADO, of Glasgow :
Gentlemen-We, the undersigned, immigrants on board the ship Tornado, from Glasgow, feel it our duty to express our heartfelt thanks to you for your kindness and gentlemanly behaviour to us whilst on board your ship during her passage from Glasgow to Melbourne ; for we believe you have done all in your power to cheer us, and to add to our comforts during the voyage; and we feel we could not have had a pleasanter passage than we have had under your command. And we also thank you on behalf of the owners, for the good and plentiful supply of provisions we have been supplied with ; also to her Majesty's Commis- sioners for chartering such a splendid vessel, but, above all, for the appointment of yourself as cap- tain. We have been a long time on board the ship in consequence of the misfortune which compelled us to put back to Greenock. But we believe it was ordained by a wise Providence ; and we are glad now we had to return ; for, if not, we should not have had the happiness of sailing under your command, for we are satisfied we could not have been better treated than you have done to us. We also thank Mr. Davis, the chief mate, and Mr. Thomson, tho second mate, also Mr. Burnett, the third mate, for their kindness and civility to us during our passage ; for whether in rough or fine weather, they were always ready to cheer and en- liven us, and better officers you could not have had ; and we hope that you and they may have a safe and prosperous voyage home, and return to the bosoms of your families in good health, is the fervent wish of

Macosh, under whose immediate care the immi- grants have come out, speaks very highly of the general conduct of the whole of them."17

    "PERJURY.
William Bird, a farmer, was arraigned at the criminal sittings of the Supreme Court yesterday before the Chief Justice on a charge of perjury. Mr. Finlayson prosecuted for the Crown, and Mr. Leon defended the prisoner. The case for the prosecution was that a case was heard at the petty sessions at Alexandra on the 5th July last, in which the accused sued Mrs. Georgina Miller, of Mer- ton, publican, for £37 9s. 9d. for goods sold and delivered. He then swore that a certain cheque for £1 was given by him to Mrs. Miller on the 6th November, 1891, as a loan, and he received no consideration whatever for it, and that he did not give it in payment for a bottle of whisky and some drinks, and received 5s. 6d. in change out of it, whereas the contrary was the case, as he did give it for a bottle of whisky and drinks, and re- ceived 5s. 6d. in change. At the hearing at the petty sessions Mrs. Miller put in a coun- ter claim, amongst which was an item of £1 for a dishonoured cheque, which was the cheque now in question. The defence was that the cheque was a loan, and that the pri- soner's statements were true. A number of witnesses were examined, both for the pro- secution and the defence, their evidence being very contradictory. The jury returned a ver- dict of not guilty, and the accused was dis- charged.26

    "AN IRATE LANDLADY.
At the District Police Court yesterday, before Mr. C. H. Nicolson, P. M., Georgina Miller, hotelkeeper at Merton in the Mans-field district, was complained against for ssaulting Charles Stocks, by business a chemist. Complainant, who is in receipt of remittances from home, came out here for the benefit of his health, and was told by defendant that Merton was the very place for him. He went there in February last, and remained until the following Decem-ber, during which period he had given de-fendant three seperate sums of £12, £35 and £20; in all, £67. His health did not improve at Merton, and the relations be- tween defendant and himself became strained. He determined therefore to take "French leave" and started at 4 a.m. on December 27 for Melbourne, walking all the way. He put up at the Shamrock Hotel in Lonsdale-street, and on the 6th inst. defendant came to the hotel and told him he was a low scoundrel, and slapped him severely on the face. She also struck him several times over the face with an umbrella, expressing a wish at the same time that she had another to break over his head. Complainant submitted to the outrage quite meekly, and said, in evi-dence, that he "would not dream of strik-ing a woman, even in self-defence." There was no denial of the assault, but, in de- fence, it was urged that complainant had brought it on himself by departing clan-destinely, and giving defendant the trouble of finding him. Mr Nicolson, P.M., said the assault was of a very serious character, and it was a curious thing for a woman to travel all the way from Merton and follow complainant to the hotel, and assault him in the violent manner she had done. A fine of £3 was inflicted, with £2/7/ costs."27
