M. with stealing a trunk and its contents valued £14, the property of Alice Amelia Walford trading as Walford and Walford on May 4 last. The evidence showed that on the date named Marion Hope Betts left an order at Walford's carriers office in Pitt street to have a trunk forwarded to Hunters Hill from the White Star wharf at Darling Harbour. As it failed to arrive at its destination she informed the firm. Inquiries revealed in ascertaining that accused Belshaw, a carrier in the employ of the firm had received the box and instead of leaving it at its proper address retained possession of it. Belshaw's sister-in-law the female accused-a servant was also in Walford's employ at Neutral Bay and some of the missing goods were found in her possession and when questioned, she declined to say where she got them. When arrested however she admitted stealing the goods, and said that she would take the blame. The trunk was discovered at Belshaw's house, and he said to the arresting constable that he wanted to return it but the woman wanted to keep it. Both pleaded guilty and the female who had previous conviction against her was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, and Belshaw owing to his previous good character was treated as first offender and sentenced to three months imprisonment but the sentence was suspended under the first offenders provisions of the Crimes Act upon his finding the necessary sureties to be of good behaviour for 32 months." on 10 June 1909 at Sydney, NSW, AUS.3
