    MISSING IN MALAYA
    The Minister for the interior
(Senator Collings) has issued a notice to quit a Government tenement at Westlake on a member of the A.I.F. who has been reported missing in Ma- laya and whose whereabouts are unknown to the Army au-
    thorities.
The man concerned was, prior to his enlistment, an employee of the Department of the Interior.
His wife has suffered continual ill- health since his enlistment and has two dependent children, one of whom has had to receive considerable hos- pital treatment.
The notice to quit is as follows:— To: Henry George Petty,
    C/- Block 34,
    Westlake, A.C.T.
I hereby give you notice to quit and deliver up possession of the cottage and premises with the appurtenances situate at Block 34 at West- lake, in the Australian Capital Territory which you hold of the Commonwealth of Australia as tenant there- of under Tenancy Agreement dated the twelfth day of August One thousand nine hundred and forty on or before the Twenty-eighth day of October next, on the ground that you have failed to observe a term or condition of the said Tenancy Agreement (the performance of which has not been waived or excused) in that you have failed to pay the rent reserved in such Agreement for at least twenty-eight days, namely, since the twenty-third day of July One thousand nine hundred and forty-two. Dated the Fifteenth day of September One thousand nine hundred and forty-two. J. S. Collings, Minister of State for the Interior for and on behalf of the Commonwealth of Australia. Henry George Petty, was, prior to his enlistment on July 6,1940, an employee of the Department of the In- terior. He sailed from Australia on July 29, 1941, and his wife has been
informed by Major-General Bennett that Petty was reported missing, whereabouts unknown.
Mrs. Petty has been in ill-health and has been both an indoor and outdoor patient at Canberra Community Hospital intermittently for some time past. When health has permitted, she has been working and has paid rent during these periods. She paid the sum of 25/- for rent and electricity to the Department on September 2, and a further £1 on September 16. The notice to quit was served
yesterday. At the time of her husband's enlistment, no rent was owing. An amount has accumulated since during periods of illness.
There are two dependent children, one 12 and the other 14. The former has been a patient of Canberra hospital for lengthy periods. Dr. Nott Asks Cabinet to Disapprove Commenting on the case, the chairman of the A.C.T. Advisory Council (Dr. L. W. Nott) said last night that whilst he was unaware at the mo- ment of the merits or demerits of the case, he was aghast at the attitude of the Minister for the Interior in personally signing an eviction order against a member of the A.I.F. at present missing in Malaya.
"It seems to me," he said, "a horrible left-handed method of evicting tenants by sending notices to missing soldiers. If this method is going to be employed against all Canberra men now reported missing, one shud- ders to think of what will become of their wives and children.
"I feel certain that the members of Cabinet will see that Senator Collings is not allowed to create a record in the Territory for evicting the wives and families of men missing on service.
It makes one seriously wonder what we are fighting for and I hope that no time will elapse before Cabinet expresses disapproval of the Minister's action."
