  MRS. SCARFFE
  Yet another of the fast-diminishing band of the district's grand old pioneers passed over the Great Divide on Sunday morning last. We refer to Mrs. Esther Scarffe, who died at her daughter's (Mrs. Parker) home at Jembaicumbene, where she had been cared for during the past 15 months. The old lady was generally esteemed and respected from one end of the district to the other.     She had been ailing for about two years, and was practically confined to her bed during the past 12 months. Her husband, the late Mr. Wm. Scarffe, predeceased her some^, 12 months ago last March. The late Mrs. Scarffe was born at Reidsdale 84 years ago, and has resided in the district ever since. She was a daughter of the late Dr. Havens, who practised at Reidsdale until he lost his sight. She leaves a family of four sons (George, William, Robert, John) and five daughter (Mrs. Keevil, Mrs. Lee, Mrs. Brown, all of Sydney, and Mrs. Parker, Jembaicumbene) to mourn, the loss of a kind and devoted mother. One daughter died some years ago. The funeral, which took place yesterday, was well attended. Her remains were interred in the C. of E. cemetery, Braidwood, the Rev. H. F. A. Champion conducting an impressive funeral service.⁵

  After an illness extending over some three months Mr. William Scarffe passed away at his residence, Reidsdale, on Monday night last at the advanced age of 98 years. Born in England, the deceased gentleman followed the avocation of a sailor, and was engaged on one of the supply ships which conveyed material and food to the British forces engaged in the Crimean War. He subsequently came to Australia, landing at Adelaide, and was engaged in different avocations till he finally landed in Araluen about 70 years ago. A few years later he married a daughter of the late Dr. Havens, who survives him, and took up his residence at Reidsdale on a farm which he acquired, where he lived till the time of his death. The deceased was a man of sterling worth, one whose word was always his bond, and one who was always ready to help a brother in distress. Until his recent illness he enjoyed consistently good health, and was as active as many men 20 years his junior.     Right up to the end, in fact, he was able to read without the aid of spectacles. He leaves a family of four sons and five daughters, viz., Messrs. George Scarffe (Sydney), William (Leichhardt), John (Delegate), and Robert (Reidsdale), Mesdames Keeble (Waverley), A. Lee (Five Dock), Brown (Five Dock), John Parker (Queensland), and Jas. Parker (Jembaicumbene). The funeral, which took place on Wednesday, was largely attended. The Rev. H. F. A. Champion conducted the service at the graveside, while Mr. E. G. Morris was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
