  • Religion*: Margaret Lithgow was Presbyterian.6
  • Immigration*: She immigrated on 15 July 1855 to Port Phillip, VIC, AUS.9
  • (Interest) Newspaper: A newspaper article of interest appeared in the Argus on 16 July 1855:
"By the courtesy of Captain Crighton, of the Tornado, we have in our possession later English news, being down to the 13th of April. As there was only one paper of that date on board, of course the news is very meagre. The vessel brings nearly four hundred Government female immigrants, who appeared to be in excel- lent health and spirits. One poor girl, just as the ship entered port, fell into a fainting fit and died. The vessel is remarkably clean, and fitted with great care to convenience and accommodation, and Dr. Macosh, under whose immediate care the immi- grants have come out, speaks very highly of the general conduct of the whole of them."10
  • (Interest) Newspaper: A newspaper article of interest appeared in the Argus on 20 July 1855:
"To the Commander, Officers, and Owners of the Clipper Ship TORNADO, of Glasgow :
Gentlemen-We, the undersigned, immigrants on board the ship Tornado, from Glasgow, feel it our duty to express our heartfelt thanks to you for your kindness and gentlemanly behaviour to us whilst on board your ship during her passage from Glasgow to Melbourne ; for we believe you have done all in your power to cheer us, and to add to our comforts during the voyage; and we feel we could not have had a pleasanter passage than we have had under your command. And we also thank you on behalf of the owners, for the good and plentiful supply of provisions we have been supplied with ; also to her Majesty's Commis- sioners for chartering such a splendid vessel, but, above all, for the appointment of yourself as cap- tain. We have been a long time on board the ship in consequence of the misfortune which compelled us to put back to Greenock. But we believe it was ordained by a wise Providence ; and we are glad now we had to return ; for, if not, we should not have had the happiness of sailing under your command, for we are satisfied we could not have been better treated than you have done to us. We also thank Mr. Davis, the chief mate, and Mr. Thomson, tho second mate, also Mr. Burnett, the third mate, for their kindness and civility to us during our passage ; for whether in rough or fine weather, they were always ready to cheer and en- liven us, and better officers you could not have had ; and we hope that you and they may have a safe and prosperous voyage home, and return to the bosoms of your families in good health, is the fervent wish of
    Yours respectfully,
Thos. Willlams, school-master; John Joseph, surgeon's assistant; Mrs Penson, matron; Zaccheus F. Fear, con-stable; Robert White; William Christie, baker; Matt. "CHEATING DEATH
    RESCUERS' VALOUR PROCLAIMED
Royal Humane Society Awards "When we go to Bendigo the first man we must see is Marcus Joseph Stapleton," said His Excellency the Governor (Lord Huntingfield) to Lady Huntingfield in the Maloja on their voyage to Australia. The wireless news of May 1 contained an account of Stapleton's gallant rescue of two injured comrades from a slope 1,600 feet below ground in the New Red, White, and Blue mine, past a row of burning fuses, after one charge had exploded prematurely. Lord Huntingfield cut out the item and pasted it in a book for later reference. Last night he met Marcus Joseph Stapleton, and handed to him the Clarke Gold Medal of the Royal Humane Society of Australasia in recognition of his bravery. It was the first occasion in seven years that the medal had been awarded.
Bolting horses and wild bulls, fire and flood, rivers and sea and treacherous waterholes, mine explosions and deadly gases, all were cheated of their prey by the gallant 60 whose deeds were proclaimed last night at the Assembly Hall at the annual distribution of awards of the society. Many live in other States and did not receive their medals and certificates personally; four were honoured by a standing audience while the secretary (Mr. R. W. E. Wilmot) read accounts of gallant attempts in which the rescuers perished. The audience applauded all as they received their awards from Lord Huntingfield, but it cheered when Leonard Fairhall, a bashful boy of 12 years, stood obviously discomfited while an account of his heroic rescue of a schoolmate from drowning was read. There was a rousing reception, too, for Mrs. Elsie May Gange, a widow, of Werribee, who, with a broom, beat off an angry bull that had severely injured a man on the farm. Mrs. Gange was one of three Australian women who were awarded bronze medals."7
