A correspondent sends us the following extract from the "Guy's Hospital Gazette" of 4th July 1896, referring to Mr. H. T. S. Bell, a son of Dr. Hugh Bell, and a well-known Brisbane "boy," who has been splendidly upholding the credit of his native place both in the hospital and in the athletic fields. The authority mentioned says :—Hugh Thomas Symes Bell is an Australian, and entered Guy's as a first year's man in May, 1891, and no greater praise can be written than in stating that he has been as successful in his examinations as he has been in the field of athletics. He passed the second Conjoint examination in March, 1893, the Primary Fellowship examination in May, 1894, and all parts of the final Conjoint examination in January, 1896. He clerked to Drs. Goodhart and Hale White, and dressed to Messrs. Lane and Lucas (six months), and has also held the appointments of anaesthetic clerk and clinical assistant. Mr. Bell has played well and often in the Rugby football team, but his most magnificent performances are those in athletic sports. In the book of races at the U.H.A.C. sports last week, we noticed that he held the hospital's record for 220 yards (22 3/5sec.) and high jump (5ft. 8in.), and that he had taken prizes in four successive years at the sports,, his best performance at 100 yards being 10 2/5sec, and in the long jump 20ft. 7in."⁶
